Oil painting on canvas - 81x100cm ( 32x40" )

It is only a forest.
In the first place I met this painting in a book, thus it was fair to place a book in the painting. It owes its title to a protagonist of this novel, though the latter is only an alibi.
For the first time there is no character in it. However, the painting is far from being anonymous. In front of the blank canvas, it's difficult to know were exactly we're aiming at. We need to write the pages, we have to work our way.
One can learn a lot about oneself by painting a forest.

So this is a canvas that I've start in March and finished in December ( with a number of gaps in between, unfortunately ). After drifting toward warmer tones, urban material and a more contemporary feel in my works, at one point I felt this retrograde impulse to immerse into the lush again, and to make that dive alone. It was shortly after a two-months period when I invested my time in the frantic, yet unproductive job of organizing an exhibition in a gallery near home. Quite naturally this painting shows a path which is more driven toward the inside. I was expecting it to look peaceful and bright, but it turned out rather dark ( and obsessive, and stiff with some twists, but that's how far self-analysis will go ; ) ).
Note that no reference was used here _ this forest is purely fantasized.

You can watch some close ups on the canvas >here<.

I will also try to make a video montage of the painting at its various stages, since I have been taking photographs of it all the way through! (if i find time, knowing the man it could take a while )

Cheerrzzzzzz !

Beautiful, but ominous. I feel like the person who was holding the book was dragged into the forest by living trees or something. Haha. I love it. Really beautifully done.

Amazing work! This forest is truely beautiful, yet it has also a scary side... I'm wondering if the reader of the abandonned book hasn't been swallowed by it, by this sea of intertwined roots...

I'm currently writing a concept for my exams this year and as a theme i started of with the fact there are so many works with the human being as leading role. I absolutely love this work, and especially the non excistence of humans with still having the feeling you can relate it to humans. haha, i think i can't explain it the right way in english. but anyhow, I love this work and i'm having a new idea flow so thank you for making it

It's interesting. I thought that, for a viewer, this book would be identified as the main character, that it'd do the storytelling by itself. But from the comments that were posted, the common question was "where is the reader gone ?" :)

Yes indeed, From my view We are so controlled by the tought of humans. i dunno, I'm hooked. This painting and the comments on it has made me think furter about the subject cause i actually wanted to skip it cause a few of my teachers thought it was not good enough of a subject. But i want to find a way to explore it. I just want to let all the humans dissapear and see what is there when it's gone. What will do the storytelling, Can we indeed let a book tell the story, can we live without a person wich is telling us how the story happens to him/her. Can we tell a story by just scenes so we can image ourselfs living it in our own form. I probably sound like a weirdo right now, but when i think of al the questions that come to mind, i just want to sit outside on a beautifull night and think while watching the sky.

The detail is quite striking. Zooming in, I like it even more than at first glance. I should like to sit next to that book. The forest is either scary or protective. It depends upon whether one is running to it--or away from something within it! Excellent.

It's dark, but the light blue gives it a sense of hope--a sense that it can go either way. The book too could be a sign of peaceful reading or of a reader who was abruptly separated from that book. Lots of story in here. I like it!
